Why A Teleprompter Is Key For Video Production

Recently we helped create a video for Destination Consultants and Experience Grand Rapids that is being used for their virtual familiarization trip experience. Amy and Tim, both in the video, wanted to convey a message that hit home with planners and meeting professionals who would be attending virtually.

We knew after a few takes that the teleprompter and script allowed Tim and Amy to hit a homerun with the video, the energy and the message they wanted to bring to the audience.

When asked about her initial reaction about using a teleprompter, Amy replied with:

“It seemed like I might come across as boring and who wants to hire a boring event planner. My initial reaction is that using a teleprompter would make my presentation seem too scripted and stale. I have such a passion for the industry that I tend to be very enthusiastic and I was worried that I would lose that ability to communicate authentically. Using a teleprompter also required having a script, which I was also leery about for the same reasons.”

Knowing that Amy was hesitant in using a teleprompter, we wanted to know how she felt while she was filming and actually using it. Her response was:

“Instead of making me more nervous (like I thought it would) having a teleprompter allowed me to relax. When you start filming there so many things to think about, one thing I forgot about was engaging with the person I was speaking to while on camera. Essentially it’s like acting, which I have always stayed clear of for many reasons one of which is being a little ADD and having a hard time remembering or staying on script. In an interview situation you don’t want to have that glazed over look that you aren’t really engaged because you are thinking about your next lines.”

After using the teleprompter, we asked Amy what she would tell others about using a teleprompter for their video needs. Her response was:

“I would tell them to at least do one shoot with the teleprompter. Have a script written out, a teleprompter standing by and just try it. If you don’t like it you can always decide to wing it ~ winging it and then deciding to have a script and teleprompter is tricky.”
