How to Photograph Your Remote Team (and Have Photos Look Similar)
I recently received an email asking the question: “How can you photograph your remote team and have photos look similar?”
Intrigued by this question, I realized it is a question that is being asked by companies both big and small.
If you’ve been wondering the same thing, know that here at Tiberius Images, as Grand Rapids business photographers, we have some great suggestions.
Here is what we suggested to the person who posed the question:
Be Informative. To start, let your remote team know that they will need to have a headshot captured sometime soon. Inform them that you will send all of the details, that they will have a budget to work with and once taken, they will simply send over the high-resolution image that they would like to use.
Choose a “Standard”. When having headshots captured, you will want to have one person be the “standard”. This can be you, or someone else. There are no rules when it comes to choosing your “standard”, it’s just all about personal preference. Find a local photographer to create a portrait with a simple setup. I recommend a white background about six feet from you, the camera about four to six feet from you, one light with a softbox and one light on the backdrop. The main light should be just next to the camera and the photographer, and the person should be turned slightly toward the light, as a way to fill in shadows.
Book a Professional. Now that you have your “standard”, it’s time to send it to your remote team and have them find a local, professional photographer. You will want to take a look at their portrait portfolios prior to booking them, to ensure that they are the right fit for your needs. In addition, you will want to send them the diagram, and ask if they can provide you with a setup like the one displayed, as it is something that is being requested by the director.
Cost. As with any professional photography, the cost of the portrait may be expensive, while some may be inexpensive. I would suggest using Google, Instagram or LinkedIn when conducting your search. In addition, for example, if you have someone in Boise, search #boiseportraitphotographer, or something similar.
Re-Touching. Once the photos have been captured, you will then want to send them to a professional retoucher who can provide the same edits for all of the images. By doing so, you can choose a fun laser background (why not, right?), a company logo or a simple background. Once the photos have been retouched and backgrounds have been swapped out, the images will have similar lighting and backdrops for your entire remote team.
