Local First in Grand Rapids was started back in 2003. Soon after we began our photography business, we met the folks running the organization and the vision of having strong and thriving, locally owned small businesses has been something we've wanted to see come to life. Today, Local First has hundreds of members around not just Grand Rapids, but also throughout the West Michigan area (Holland, Grand Haven, etc).
This year, we are so excited to let our readers know we are part of the "Discover Your Local Treasure" campaign. Throughout the next few weeks (and months) you will see different ads for business across the West Michigan area. Ads will be displayed on everything from online search networks to billboards to print, etc. Be sure to be on the lookout for all of these locally owned businesses that keep 73% more money in West Michigan compared to non-locally owned companies.
As you visit our profile on the Local Treasure website (www.localtreasure.org), you will see a great photo of us (taken by local photographer James Richard Fry) and a handful of details about our company, its history and what makes us different compared to so many other photographers in the Grand Rapids area.
As you go out this holiday season to buy gifts for friends and family, be sure to note some great statics that Local First has compiled over the past decade, including:
- 73% more money stays in the community when you support a locally-owned business.
- On average, locally-owned businesses donate 350% more than national or chain businesses.
- A small shift towards local could create jobs! A recent study showed that shifting $1 in $10 currently being spent towards local businesses would create 1,600 jobs and $140 Million in new economic impact.
