The University of Michigan's College of Engineering came to the west side of the state to visit the West Michigan Aviation Academy, a school initially founded for students interested in aviation and engineering. The purpose of their visit was not to simply disrupt the school's day, but to make an announcement about a new partnership between the WMAA and the UofM College of Engineering. On hand were WMAA CEO Pat Cwayna, UofM College of Engineering Dean David Munson, WMAA Board President Dick DeVos, Jr., UofM Regent Andrea Fischer Newman, GE Aviation's George Kiefer and WMAA Engineering Faculty Ron Baum to deliver exciting news to students and faculty.
The announced agreement between the two organizations will allow WMAA students to have access to a deeper engineering curriculum and a clearer path to the University of Michigan's Engineering College. In addition to the agreement, Dean Munson announced a new scholarship from the J. Scott Grill family. Grill, a UofM College of Engineering Alumni was an aerospace engineer with McDonnell Douglas but grew up in the Grand Rapids area. Preference for this scholarship will be given to students at WMAA interested in studying aerospace engineering at UofM and will provide an annual dollar amount to help fund the student's education. This partnership signals a concentrated effort on the part of the University of Michigan to reach out to Michigan area schools as they continue to invest in the programs that prepare students before arrival at UofM's campus.
This press conference was a wonderful event to be a part of as it marks a new chapter for WMAA in terms of it journey as a charter school in West Michigan. The VIPs invited to the event, faculty and students were all eager to hear about the details of the new UofM / WMAA partnership.
Events like this happen all the time in the West Michigan area. The University of Michigan contacted us about the event asking if we were available and talking about the details of what they were looking for in terms of photographs. This is the type of event photography in Grand Rapids is what we specialize in for companies and organizations. We were happy to serve not only UofM, but also WMAA and the other organizations involved.
