Family Photography for the Christmas Season
Tiberius Images has been busy this fall with family portraits. With the fall colors in bloom, the most common place for family photos have been outside this year. With the weather turning colder, you still have time to put together your family’s photograph for your living room and Christmas card. With this in mind, here are a few tips for taking your family portrait:
Location, Location, Location! When choosing the setting for your family portrait, take the time to think about the best possible setting for the shot. I always suggest choosing a place that best represents you and your family. What do you enjoy doing together? Are you an country family or urban dwellers? Remember that the bond your family shares can be represented in the setting you choose for the shot, so pick a meaningful location!
Compose Strategically.O nce you arrive at your location, pay attention to the composition of the shot. Backlighting is ideal, especially if you can place lighter tones in the foreground. Also, be aware of the background tones, and choose clothing that will work with the setting. For instance, you may want to wear lighter clothing against a dark background. If you are coordinating everyone’s clothing for the photo, use similar color tones for everyone’s outfit, but do not have everyone wear the same thing, as it detracts from the individuality of each family member.
Arrange Your Group Wisely. When arranging everyone, it is best to start with an “anchor,” and build the arrangement from there. This could be either mom or dad, but it could also be one of the kids, a sentimental object, or the family dog! If you have young children, get the adults set up first, then bring in the kids, as their attention span will not last very long. You may want to bring an attention getter along for the kids, but be sure they stand directly behind the camera. Also, try not to have everyone’s heads at the same level, as different levels can add much more depth to the shot.
Take the Shot! You’ve set everyone up and ready to shoot – so shoot away. If you have questions, feel free to contact Grand Rapids photographer Tiberius Images as we are always eager to help you and your family capture your family on camera. The point is to capture a photograph of your family at its best and that is what we strive to do!
